The Basics of American Food WritingFood writing is part of American history. In fact, if you look at the literature from earlier decades of our nation's existence, you will notice that food writing was very popular. Writing about foods was a way to tell about the American experience in foreign countries. For example, there were books written by restaurants and other businesses on their various recipes.
As time went on, food writing became more elaborate. Books were written on how to prepare food. Instead of just explaining how to cook, these books included illustrations of how it was done and included recipes along with all the ingredients needed to make it. In the early twentieth century, advertising and socializing became big business in restaurants. The cookbooks expanded to become more than just practical advice. People became interested in looking at how they could put their cooking into a marketing plan. Newspapers were also a part of this, as they were included in many famous newspapers. They were an important part of the way people talked about their food, as they would provide an entire report on a dish, or show photos of the preparation. This led to some new concepts of cooking. A table setting used to be different from what we are used to today. It would be very crowded, and the meal would be served immediately. It was usually at a high counter, so it was a lot faster and easier to cut, slice, and serve a dish. American food writing became even more popular during World War II. The war opened up some opportunities for businesses to offer food packages that had special features. Many of the dishes were printed on paper to help speed up the process of making it. With the advent of this form of catering, the food writing in the newspapers grew. Another concept that took off in the 1960s is the writing on paper topics. These would take the place of the more elaborate stuff from the earlier years, but they were still quite exciting. The menus were pictures, and the paper topics were full of information about ingredients and cooking methods. Cooking classes were available as well. Today, there are some things that have remained the same, and others that have become a bit dated. However, the basic concepts have remained the same. Because of the nature of technology, it is possible to enjoy reading about food without having to worry about eating it! |
